Update: twice a week

I have been fooling around with this blog again, now that my energy is coming back, and have decided that two blogs a week (Sunday and Thursday) are perfectly sufficient for now – for myself (to make myself feel productive) and for all of you readers (so that you don’t have to read too much of my drivel).

Now and then there will be a special post – like this one – but they will almost always be short or topical or informational or seasonally-oriented.

How’s that for a deal?

Happy Christmas from your sleepy little friend . . . .

Almost better

Okay.

I am almost better. I am no longer in treatment, and they are no longer cooking my throat with radiation, and I can actually tell a difference. Chemotherapy is now also a thing of the past, and the nasty side-effects are subsiding. I am still waiting for some of the lingering stuff to pass: the fatigue, the come-and-go voice (I sound, when I speak, something like Tallulah Bankhead and/or Lucille Ball, with maybe a little mid-career Lindsay Lohan thrown in), the inability to swallow. (The latter is coming back a bit; I managed to sip some water and juice the other day without coughing, and I was very excited.)

Anyway. I am also writing again, so evidently my energy is coming back. I can’t promise a daily blog, but I can promise something once in a while – maybe once a week or so – until I am back to my usual rude vigor.

Aren’t you pleased?

Change of site, Jan 1 2013: a heads-up

Wordpress_logo

To all my good friends on Posterous (and on Blogger too):

I have been having nasty problems with Posterous lately. I publish my blog there, and Posterous used to be nice enough to post it to Facebook, and Blogger, and WordPress, and Tumblr. Lately, however, Posterous has been very cranky; it won't do WordPress and Tumblr at all anymore (this has been flickering on and off for several months now).

So I am very seriously thinking about moving my main blogsite to WordPress.

It's a nice site, and there are lots of folks over there I like; most of my favorite blogs are on WordPress. They won't let me upload MP3 files, as Posterous does, but I have found a workaround for that.

Also: Posterous autoposts directly to Blogger, and I have a number of readers on Blogger. And I don't want to lose them. (For some reason, WordPress won't autopost to Blogger. Go figure).

Anyway, on January 1 2013, I am going to go to WordPress and Tumblr (and Facebook) exclusively, I think. Unless things in the Posterous environment change significantly.

If you subscribe to me on either Posterous or Blogger, please do me the enormous favor of going to futureworldblog.wordpress.com and subscribing to me there. It's a very nice site, trust me.

And everything will be just fine.

Happy birthday, blog!

Future

I have been chunking out this blog for exactly one year now. My original challenge to myself was to see if I could generate a page a day for an indefinite period of time, and keep it fresh and (preferably) interesting, and maybe even funny once in a while.

It has given me a chance to set down some personal memories. It has allowed me to think aloud. It has helped me to think about my writing style, which has evolved (for better or worse) over the past year. I'm at least a more fluent writer than I was then. The words just come erupting out of me.

It has been instructive. The blog entries which have attracted the most notice have been about entertainment, in one form or another: one about Ray Davies of the Kinks, another about this year's Transformers sequel, another about “Jersey Shore.” Lesson: while I may write tremblingly beautiful little essays about my Aunt Petunia, no one really cares about my Aunt Petunia. People care about topics of common interest, like television and movies.

And politics! I have not gone there very often. I have not been shy of it, exactly; I'm out there, on the Internet, espousing my own (diluted and frightened) version of radical socialism, as well as my loathing for the poisonous conservative factions that are crippling our country and its recovery from recession these days. But I do not think people are reading me for my opinions on these things.

Sometimes I write about “gay issues.” I'm not exactly a leader in the LGBTQ community, but I have been a card-carrying member since the mid-1970s, so I have a few opinions. I am amazed at how far we've come. I am in agony when I think of how far we have to go.

And then there's the future. I named this blog “FutureWorld," knowing exactly what I meant, and I've explained it over and over again: here we are! In 2011! The Future! Lasers, and computers, and nuclear reactors, and cars that know how to park themselves! And we're still not happy! We still haven't achieved perfection! Everything is the same as it was a thousand years ago, and if we're not careful, we'll be cutting one another's ears off in a little while, fighting over bread and fish and dirty drinking water!

Ah me.

Here's to another dreadful year.

I hope, somehow, it brings all of us happiness.

Happy birthday, little blog.
