For Sunday: Shirley Bassey sings "St. Louis Blues"

I first heard this classic song in high school. I used to listen to the soloist rehearsing it – she sang it with just piano accompaniment – and I was more and more amazed at how good it was.

This performance from the 1950s, when Shirley Bassey was in her teens, is very good.

I love that man like a schoolboy loves his pie,
Like a Kentucky colonel loves his mint and rye.
I’ll love that man ‘til the day I die.
